“This season has been a real struggle to watch,” he told us. “We’ve had tough times before, but this? This is something else.”
Le Tissier admits it's been hard to watch the team get outclassed week in, week out. “It’s not been enjoyable seeing our team get battered like this,” he said.
He remembers the good old days when Southampton were fighting it out until the last day. “We were always competitive, even when we were close to the drop,” he recalled.
But this season? “There just didn’t seem to be the same fight in the team,” he said. “And it’s not just me saying it. I’ve heard it from fans too.”
Le Tissier believes some fans might actually be happy to see the Saints drop back to the Championship. “When we were in the play-offs last season, I heard a lot of fans saying they didn’t mind if we lost the final,” he said.
“They were worried about what would happen if we went up again. They didn’t want to see us get battered every week.”
Le Tissier thinks the team's lack of fight has been a big issue. “Most of the frustration is at the players,” he said. “They don’t seem to care enough about the club.”
But he also thinks this could be a chance for the Saints to rebuild. “Clubs have their ups and downs,” he said. “But this is a pretty big downer. And it shows just how low we’ve got to.”
