Sutton has rejected doubts raised by some pundits about Gyokeres' ability to replicate his goalscoring form in the Premier League.
"It's just typical that people make instant judgments about new players," said Sutton on BBC Radio 5 Live's Monday Night Club.
"When players join a new team, it takes time for them to settle in. Gyokeres didn't receive much service on Sunday, as Bukayo Saka had a poor game and Gabriel Martinelli didn't look for him as much."
Sutton pointed out that Gyokeres had impressive numbers in the Portuguese league and showed his finishing skills in the Champions League.
"As a striker, you need opportunities to score. The understanding between teammates will come with time and training together," Sutton explained.
