Atlético Madrid's club record of consecutive away wins at RC Celta de Vigo came to an end at five, but they still managed to take the lead early in the game. Pablo Barrios' pass was turned into his own net by Carl Starfelt, giving the visitors a 1-0 advantage.
The hosts responded well to this setback and were the better team for most of the first half. Atlético Madrid's first shot on target didn't come until the 34th minute, when David Hancko's effort from the left side of the area was saved by Ionuț Radu.
The game changed in the 39th minute when Atlético defender Clement Lenglet received a second yellow card for preventing a Celta counter-attack, leaving his team with 10 players. This gave Celta renewed hope, but they were unable to capitalize on their numerical advantage before halftime.
Celta struggled to take advantage of their one-man lead, as Atletico's defense held strong. It wasn't until the 68th minute that the hosts recorded their first shot on target in the second half, and they made the most of it when Iago Aspas scored the equalizer from a yard out, despite the rebound coming from Borja Iglesias' close-range effort.
This was Celta's seventh consecutive LaLiga game with exactly one goal, and they remain winless in the league this season. However, they sit 16th in the table, above the relegation zone. Atletico Madrid climbed to fifth place, three spots above their previous position.
